Poor Bob.. Died on sunday after suffering Cancer for the last while..
Thanks to bob, the Synthesizer changed from bieng the Monster-sized nightmare manufactured by & for Massive corporations (RCA et al..) to something a typical everyday superstar rocker could afford...
The Product That started the Synth Revolution, and led to the Japanese Invasion Lead by Roland and Korg, Was the MINI by moog.. A 3 1/2 Octave Monosynth, that could be carried on & off stage, and Hardly Drifted at all.. (ehm..) The MINI found it`s home atop Many a grand Piano/Hammond organ, and only really had one nemesis throughout it`s 10-year domination of the Synth Market - The ARP Odyessy. In fact, if you didn`t have BOTH in the 70's, you were surely a poof, and not worthy of the title "keyboardist".
Bob's creations were wonderfull, and many variations on the MINI came about, but none captured the continental drift, and resultant PHATness of the MINI..
The initial MOOG craze of the early 70's passed, when a glut of MOOG albums filled the shelves of WOOLWORTHS.. No longer were you faced with instrumental compilations of so-called "hits" made on MOOG synths, but were faced with New snazzy Progressive Rock Combos all spanking thier Moogs on Vinyl to great effect.. Soon Polyphonic Synths came along, with Sequential Circuts and Yamaha Leading the Pack with thier Massive 5 & 8-key Poly Machines, and Bob's Company Responded with the Now Ledgendary POLY MOOG.. The Poly was FULLY poly - so not 5/8/10 keys at once, but ALL keys at once if you likes! Sadly, this was achieved through trickery, and the POLYMOOG sounded underwhelming for it`s 2-tonne weight, and crazy pricetag.. FOr full-on "yes it is" Moog Poly fun, you should seek out the totally horny MEMORYMOOG - a monster of Digital/analogue hybridness, that simply destroyed everything eles available at the time, and still out-ballses every other analogue poly ever made! Yes it does.
For some nice MOOG MODULAR action, you should check out the Mick Jagger/Stones Movie "Performance", where mick plays His Moog Modular, er, Kind of.. For Some Hot MINIMOOG action, check ULTRAVOX's VIENNA album, and for some Hot POLYMOOG action, check GARY NUMAN's PLEASURE PRINCIPAL album.. If you fancy some elevator music moogy covers, seek out any of the works of DICK HYMAN.. And if you want Proper talent Moog Modular Alchemy, then look no furthar then the works of WENDY CARLOS, who managed to re-create the interesting classical works of BACH on her "SWITCHED ON BACH" album, and put the entire MOOG range through it`s paces on the CLOCKWORK ORANGE soundtrack
