And so, Xmas is upon us once again, and it`s time to play that age-old seasonal favorite game - BUYING A NEW COMPUTER. As you all know, Christmas has meant "COMPUTER" since the Dark Ages, when lucky children would write notes to santa asking for SIMON, TANK ATTACK or a BABBAGE ENGINE, in hopes of downloading free tunes, games, movies and porn, while bullieng people they never would have had a hope of intimidating before the advent of cyber-bashing in playgrounds provided by People who sell things... Sadly, the best they could hope for was some iron filings to chew, or an apple. No, not a MAC, a real apple. I know. Tell me about it. (pause in respect of FRUIT - now no longer given to kids at Xmas) Anyway, Xmas was pretty meaningless right thru 1981, when a nice balding man in England invented something people actually WANTED. The Sinclair Personal computer. The ZX80, the ZX81 and finally the Spectrum CHANGED THE WORLD. Gone was mass, cabbage and domestic violence, in favour of screaming noises, mesmerising moving lines, and squeals of pleasure as the thing you taped off a bloke at school actually loaded and let you discover that you really DID need to copy the instructions after all, and he wasn`t just bieng an anal prick about it all. By the mid 80s, everyone owned at least 3 computers, and approx. 1 million pounds worth of bent software. Schools had plenty of computers, mostly with Disk-Drives and colour screens, and WonderWoman had a computer that looked like a dog. Fantastic. Now you didn`t have to be Ugly or Stupid to be picked on - you just had to have the Wrong type of Computer. Yep. This is where it ALL went wrong. If you Didn`t have the right gear, you simply could not communicate with anyone else you met. "anyone wanna swap stuff for the MSX?" - got you a beating for bieng a spa.. i mean, NOBODY had an MSX, and if they did, they kept quiet about it, for MSX was for sale in the same shops yer ma bought Hoover-Bags.. Nah. Sorry. Had to be a Commodore PET, Vic-20,C-64 or Amiga (usually in that order) or you woz blanked. Sure, people pretended the SPECTRUM was cool, and it was actually the easiest Machine to get free stuff for, but at the end of the day, it was a bit, well, crap. Spesh if you had been given a real good burn on a C-64. Now, APPLE had always been the best-kept secret of the mico fans.. Since the Apple ][ we had enjoyed Color screens, Disk drives, Modems blah blah blah.. but they were SO expensive. even the ropey clones were dead expensive, and the Apple ][ was the ONLY reason I went to school at all, for we had 3 of them. Oh yes. PENNY ARCADE and SABOTAGE all the way homeslice.. But the Apple never really made it into peoples HOMES. Now of coarse, you simply MUST have a computer, or you are wierd or something, and now we have ONLY 2 choices - Apple or PC. So, this Xmas you cannot really go wrong - you will not be hated forever for buying the wrong machine, as there is only 2 out there.. RESULT! Well, not really. You see, people are STILL buying into the bullshit. Think about it. For 25 years people have been buying Computers for the home, and all the way they have been DICKED. Everytime they bought a computer to change their lives, it was crap and sad and useless within 3 years. The people selling them knew this, the bloke in the shop knew this, but we didn't. we got RIPPED. again and again we bought crap that ended up in the bin. WHY? STOP THIS NOW! THEY KNOW THIS! yes they do. they INTEND having you buy another machine to do exactly the same fuc*ing thing again in 2 years. Don`t believe me? well now then. EXAMPLE: The Apple mac. It`s totally crap. Sold to people that know nothing about computers. So, when the New version of your software you "actually paid for" comes along, and you, the twat mac user wants to upgrade to the new version that actually does what you want and SWEARS it won't go tits up all the time, and you realise to run it properly you need "MAC OS 5-MILLION", when you are currently on OS 4.9 MILLION, you ALSO buy a copy of "MAC OS 5-MILLION", attempt to install it, feeling the joy as you know it will fix your slow, unreliable, not as nice as it used to be computer, and choke as it tells you you need (wait for it) a NEW FUC*ING MAC to run IT?!??! Yes, this is TRUE. It happens. As a mac user. Go on. It`s true! Seriously, the new versions of Mac operating systems insist on certain hardware bieng there to install & run - Hardware that can ONLY be got by REPLACING YOUR COMPUTER WITH A NEW ONE. "Fair enough" you think.. "All in the name of Progress" you think. No, you are STUPID. it`s a LIE. You do NOT need to buy a new mac with USB2 ports to use Mac OS 10.? on, you can HACK it in there, and run it on a 10-year old MAC. Use a search engine! it's all there... They are LYING to you and banking on you bieng stupid enough to buy into it.. So, Macs are shite - but you KNEW that. So it leaves PCs as the computer to buy. Hmm.. Not much of a choice is it? Well, the PC isn`t short of it`s sneaky tricks.. Also with a PC, when you buy one, and an operating system, you AGREE it doesn`t work! Read the Print! it's there! So, you must expect to UPGRADE it - with software fixes, security patches etc.. SECURITY? you mean FINANCIAL SECURITY - for software vendors! Have you noticed how recently, your Microsoft PC is getting shittier by the day? How it`s slower to start, and prone to failure? No, really, stop laughing, i mean MORE then usual? Wanna know why? It`s cos' Microsoft are about to release the new VISTA system.. I PROMISE that if you install VISTA, it will cure ALL the things that bug you about XP.. No, seriously.. It`s gonna save the day man.. And it`s only $300! Wow! (etc.) Yeah, so that puts the ribbons on PCs as well then eh? No, there is an alternative to this.. LINUX.. Yep, good old Linux. Looks like Windows and a Mac, Has all the same shit on it, and it will run on ANY MAC, PC and most Handhelds and So on. It won`t kill itself to get you to buy stuff.. It, doesn`t do viruses.. It comes with Blowfish Encryption and USB stick-support to annoy the police and avoid "gary glitter" syndrome.. It`s free, and now that we have all settled down into mostly Online Use of our machines, it`s damn usefull. Sure, you can get it to run DOOM 3, and Emulate a MAC, WINDOWS, AMIGA, SPECTRUM, MegaDRIVE etc. all at the same time as well - You can enjoy ALL the crap computers you ever owned, and raid the MANY librarys (some complete) of software for them! So, the final words on this: XMAS = Computers, and Computers = Ripoff, but Linux = Revenge

Now. I`m sure you are all dieng to know my take on saturday night's activitys at RTE.. Well.. i saw VERY LITTLE as i was on the air at the time.. But, i can Confirm there was a Garda standing in the lashings of rain outside the revolvy-door trying not to laugh as i left at a bit past midnite.. I had 2 visitors during the show, one at 10 and another at 11.30 - just after the alleged incident, and neither saw a thing.. not a peep. You all know where this guy went wrong don`t you? yes, that's right - he was driving a MICRA. No, not a Modded one, nor one stuffed with highly-unstable homemade explosives.. It wasn`t armour-plated or "armadillo-ised" A-Team stylee, and it didn`t have the roof cut away to allow mounting of a heavy machinegun.. He didn`t even fill his boot with gravel and weld on a cattle-bouncer sawn off a 4x4 in Jury's carpark.. Nope. TOTAL lack of preperation. I can think of a VERY deserving HUMMER in the Dublin area that would have done the job ALOT better.. Belongs to someone who would LOVE to see it written off, since selling it has prooved difficult/impossible.. As you know, the HUMMER comes with ALL the attachments needed to ram a television studio: Barrier-slicing rotating scaffold-rippers, Snow/Sandbag-tossing plow, Barrier & concrete-shredding Alloys, Twin Self-Lubricating and Loading Chat-Show Host auto-targeting laser-guided 80mm cannons, front & rear.. Xenon Headlights, Crush Velvet Body-Bag Launcher and 2 x 8.9litre Quad-Turbo Supercharged Rolls-Royce "Lancaster" Engines, running wet nitrous natch... Now, THATS how to Bust up a TV Show, Geraldo-style! You see where he went wrong? Good. Now, let's make the effort next time shall we, and maybe try adjusting the plan slightly, so the target area is actually a TV studio, and not the side door to the Makeup booths.. Oh, and try and do it when there is a show in progress as well, that might help. So, this guy.. What can i say.. GENIUS. This HAS to be the work of a new Hidden-Reality show for TV3.. "When Attempts to disrupt a Live TV Show Go BAD.." Yeah, that would explain his 2 OTHER attempts during the week - on tuesday at 3am he tried to fly a packet of JACOBS FIG ROLLS into the Radio building, but it rained that night, and he ended up making a soft brown mushy pile just at the corner by donnybrook church, which an old lady mistook for roadkill the next morning, and rang JOE DUFFY to complain about (etc).. And then on thursday morning he attempted to gain access to RTE by disguising himself as GERRY RYAN's arsehole, only to be sussed as Gerry was off sick that day.. What rotten luck! Yep, that's the makings of a New Show, or at the LEAST a competition on TODAY FM - they could offer a holiday or something to anyone that sucessfully pops their back tyres burning out on the LATE LATE SHOW stage.. Whatever, from now on, i'm doing my show from the top of the Antenna Mast, it`s safer.
