    doing a telecomms module in college..was wondering could you build your own sat and using a decoder box get the sat channels?

    Ha that would be fun..
    Glad to see ur still alive and in college..
    Build a crystal set (a wha?)and shove it up the tutors arse, and claim its modern technology.

      most digital broadcasting is standardised, the brand bieng DVB, Digital Video Broadcasting... There are several chipsets that decode the mpeg into piccys, but MOST boxes have the same chips doing the same job, it's the interface that changes..

      building your own satbox nowdays really involves design of a chassis with a perticular chipset, and then bashing about with the SDK from the chipset vendor..

      best place to start? get a SKYSTAR (hauppauge etc..) Pci card for your PC 2nd hand on eBay, and have a go at www.progdvb.com for more ideas... you will be STUNNED at what you can do with one, especially with the numerous hooky plugins
